Is the Mazda 6 a sports car? That depends on who you are asking. If this question had been asked about its predecessor the Mazda 626 the answer would have been more readily uttered. The 626 was a highly anticipated sedan that was compared with the top European sedans in terms of visual appeal and performance. The 626 was supposed to give Mazda a car that would rival its competition in the family-sedan field. Well, to make a long story short, that vision never became a reality for the Mazda sedan. While the car did make a favorable impression initially, alterations over time watered down the car and the sedan got lost in the shuffle. The short lived, 626 was not a sports car.
Back to the Mazda 6: This offshoot of the 626 has also gone through some changes since it first appeared on the scene. Originally, the car was more compact, which gave the impression of a sports car, and its sporty suspension tuning added to the sports car persona. However, to form a strong team, each position in the line up must be filled. Quarter backs must be quarter backs, linemen must be linemen and receivers must be receivers. With this in mind, remember that each position in the Mazda line up must be filled as well and the 6 was built to be a midsize sedan not a sports car. The car has been enlarged to accommodate more people comfortably and this has taken away some of the sporty feel. However, the handling of this sedan is still remarkable. Contunue Reading
