Every car owner in the world is required to get insurance for themselves and their car in one way or the other. In the U.S. alone, majority of the states require a comprehensive car insurance policy tied up with each car traveling on the road. But more than just a government mandate, insurance is good way to protect the investment you made in your car.

However, the problem with car insurance premiums is that they can be very costly. There are different factors as to how each car is assessed for insurance. The insurance provider looks at different angles to come up with the monthly premium you have to pay for your car. This is an individual assessment, meaning what you’re going to pay for annually is not going to be the same as your neighbor’s regardless if both of you had bought the same car on the same date.

These are the common factors that car insurance providers look at. Check them out so that you’ll know how you can possibly lower the car insurance premium you’d have to pay for your own car:

1. Your driving history

Are you a good driver? Have you had any accident reports or traffic violations in the past six months? Keep in mind that insurance providers prefer a defensive, careful driver. This is because these types of car owner are not likely to put their car in bumpy situations that would otherwise mean insurance claims later on. The fewer claims you’re likely to make in a given year, the lower your insurance premiums will be.

2. The safety features of your car

How many safety features does your car have? The more it has, the better your rates would be. So whenever you shop for a car, try to ask the dealer all about the car’s safety features first. This would help you in the decision process greatly, especially if you’re more concerned about the monthly insurance premium you are to pay along with the purchase. Airbags and automatic brake systems are just a few good examples. Certain cars are made very durable to resist minor bumps and accidents on the road. If your car is one of these, then you should be paying less.

3. The model and make of your car

If you don’t know it yet, flashy sports cars like a Porsche and a Ferrari requires bigger insurance than a regular sedan. Why? This is because these cars are so expensive that sending them in for repair is going to cost equally high. Furthermore, these cars normally have lesser safety features to give way to more aesthetics. It has got higher speed, convertible roofs, and a lot more things that car insurance providers would frown upon. So if these are the types of car you want, expect to pay so much for insurance.

4. Deductibles

Car insurance providers understand the pains that car owners have to go through when it comes to the payment of premiums. As so they have come up with a simple solution for it – deductibles. Deductibles pertain to the amount the insurance provider would deduct to the total claim. The resulting amount would be the one they would write a check for. And so if you get a car insurance policy with a higher deductible, you’d end up paying lower premiums. Lower deductibles mean higher premiums. You get to choose the deductible amount of your car insurance.

Knowing these factors would help you decrease the annual car insurance premium you are to pay. By using some workaround, you’d definitely pay lesser fees in the long run.

Smart cars are fast becoming more popular over the last 12 months. Originally considered a novelty, the smart car is on the rise as a modern fuel efficient and cheap motoring alternative.

Cheap smart cars are now an excellent way to avoid the high cost of motoring.

You may already be familiar with smart cars. A tiny four wheeled vehicle no more than about half the length of a normal car. The smart car has a distinctive shape and look and you may well have seen them in the street.

If not you’ll recognize a smart car when you do see it. The most distinctive feature of the car, apart from the fact that the smart car is extremely short, is the steep windshield sloping down to the front of the car, with the front bumper, if you could call it that, right in front of the front wheels.

The original intention of the smart car was to be of use as a vehicle that avoided the parking headaches of larger cars by reason of the fact that it was so short it could park in parking spots so small that not much other than a motorcycle could park there. Not only that but it was also so small that it could park nose or tail in to the kerb without the other end of the car poking out into the traffic and causing a traffic hazard.

It was intended that two smart cars could park in a space which would normally be taken by one regular car, or even 3 smart cars could park in the space occupied by a large vehicle.

The smart car was the result of a joint venture between Daimler Benz the car manufacturer and Swatch the Swiss watch manufacturer. The smart cars were manufactured in a purpose built factory in France which as established in 1994 and so have been around for some time. It is said that almost 1 million smart cars have been sold in over 25 countries.

In early 2008 smart cars became available in the US, and people started to realize that a cheap smart car was a smart motoring purchase.

Smart cars are cheap compared to average vehicles, and have many advantages over many vehicles as well. And of course they also have disadvantages. They take only 2 people, and are extremely small so it isn’t practical to spend a day shopping and expect to put your new television in the back of the car.

That being said there are some good reasons to buy a cheap smart car, particularly for city dwellers. As said they are cheap to buy and cheap to operate. They have a gasoline motor but because of the small size and weight of the car don’t eat as much fuel as just about any other car. They are easy to park and easy to house even in the smallest garage. They have achieved surprisingly good results in safety crash tests.

For the canny buyer there are good reasons to buy a cheap smart car. There are small numbers of used smart cars on the market and a second hand smart car is a good way to maximise your savings from a purchase of a smart car. There are a number of places where you can pick up a bargain on a used smart car online if you know where to look.

So if the price of gas is becoming an issue for you and you’d like to keep driving but at a much reduced cost then consider a cheap smart car. It’s a smart purchase and may well keep you on the road when others can no longer afford gas.

A lot of people say that buying a second-hand car means buying someone else’s troubles. This may have little truth in it. However, there are good second hand cars that can be considered as a best buy. In reality, there’s no simple answer to the question as to whether or not you should buy second hand cars. It all depends upon your own personal experience on the road and how well you know about cars.

If your budget can’t possibly buy you a new car, you can try checking out the display of second-hand car dealers. These cars can actually cost half as much the price of a regular car. Some dealers even do financing on the vehicles that they are selling. But just because the car is cheap, it doesn’t mean that it is the answer to your needs. Keep in mind that you’re always getting what you pay for. Cheaper car may mean older car or a troublesome car of some sort. You have to practice total discretion when choosing.

Whenever you can, try to check out the second-hand cars being sold by individuals and not by car dealers. This way, you can personally talk to the actual owner of the car about its condition. You may not always get a totally honest answer, but at least you know that you won’t end up buying a fully-battered vehicle. Look at the aesthetics of the car. Check its engine. You should have an eye for good cars and bad cars in order to get a best buy.

You should also test drive the car you wanted to buy. This is your chance to listen for odd sounds on the engine. You should also try all the controls of the car and see if they still work. Overall, you would be able to know whether the car is a well-maintained vehicle or not. A quick check at the mileage of the car would tell you whether the car is being used frequently.

Buying a second-hand car is much like buying a new car. You have to research the models you’d like to buy rather than just settling on what you see at the garage. Keep in mind that each car has its own features. It differs in the type of petrol it uses, transmission system, safety features, handling, and a host of other features. You have to consider all of these when buying second-hand cars too. As much as possible, make a checklist of the things you want in a car and bring it with you over the car dealer’s. Ask the owner about all of them and see how each car fairs. Get the one that meets your expectations.

If you want to buy a car for your teenager, a second-hand car is a good vehicle to start with. While your son or your daughter might not like the idea, a second-hand car is actually a good breeding ground for them as they learn the basics of driving and as they move their way on the major highways. But you have to be very careful when choosing a car for them. You don’t want to give them a car that is not safe to drive or always have to be sent for repairs. Choose wisely so that your teenager would like a second-hand car well enough.
